Q:  When should I test my smoke alarm?
A:  You should test your smoke alarm monthly.

Q:  When should I change the batteries in my smoke alarm?
A:  You should change the batteries with every time change (twice a year) at a minimum.

Q:  Where should I mount my smoke alarm in my home?
A:  Smoke alarms should be installed according to the Manufacturers Instructions for your brand of smoke alarm (smoke alarms are usually mounted near the highest point of the ceiling in the room you intend to equip).

Q:  How many smoke alarms do I need in my home?
A:  Although not always economically feasible, a smoke alarm in every room of the home is the best answer.  The minimum recommended is a smoke alarm in each bedroom and in each additional level of the home.

                                                            Fire Hydrant frequently asked questions:

                                                            Picture

Q:  Why do some fire hydrants in town have different colored bonnets?
A:  The Fire Hydrants located within the Bloomfield Fire District have been painted to follow the National Fire Protection Association (N.F.P.A.) standard No. 291 Recommended Practice for Fire Flow Testing and Marking of Hydrants.  The bonnet colors reflect the hydrant class based on the flow rate (gallons per minute) available from each hydrant.  The flow rates are listed below:

Class AA - Light Blue:  Rated capacity of 1,500 GPM or greater.
Class A - Green:           Rated capacity of 1,000 GPM to 1,499 GPM.
Class B - Orange:         Rated capacity of 500 GPM to 999 GPM.
Class C - Red:              Rated capacity of less than 500 GPM.

Hydrants with the bonnet painted "black" are unable to be flow tested by the BL.F.D. due to a flow rate of less than 282 GPM.

Fire hydrants within the Bloomfield Fire District that have a bonnet painted any color other than those listed above are either waiting for repair or have been tested but, not yet color coded to the above standards.

Q:  Who do I call if I notice damage to a fire hydrant?
A:  Please contact the Bloomfield City Hall by dialing (573)568-3464 so that a work order for the Public Works Department can be completed.
